Introduction: Seeking Wisdom in Trials

Praise the Lord, good evening once again. Greetings to all of you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Praise the Lord. We need to gain wisdom to know God's purpose in our life in times of trials and difficulties—to have the wisdom to understand God's purposes during trials. In the second session, we looked at the wealth of this world and eternal life and what has more value. We were meditating on all that, and in the previous class, we looked at temptation toward sin and all these things.

Today we are going to meditate on James chapter 1, verses 16, 17, and 18. So we will prayerfully sit in the presence of God and ask God to speak to each one of us. Let me read to you those verses:

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting in the exercise of his own will. He brought us forth by the word of truth, so that we would be a kind of first fruits among His creatures.”

The Warning: Do Not Be Deceived

This is a very precious message from God’s Word of what is God’s perfect gift to each one of us. It begins by saying, “Do not be deceived, my brothers,” giving us a warning, telling us to be watchful and not be deceived. In the last class, we said, “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God.’” For God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. No evil comes from God. Do not be deceived—no evil comes from God. And what will come from God is this: every good thing given and every perfect gift comes from God.

So, we need to connect this with what we meditated on last week. Last week we were looking at all the evil things—they do not come from God. All evil things come from our own desires; they arise from within us. When we are led, when we are persuaded, when we are instigated by our own evil thoughts, evil comes from within us. But God is the source of all good and perfect things. Every good thing given and every perfect gift from above is from above.

Redefining the "Good Gift"

We remember this Scripture often. In our prayers, in different contexts and situations, we recall that every good thing and every perfect gift comes from God. David, in the “Do not be deceived” teaching, says that evil does not come from God. No evil has any part with God. We remember this Scripture very often—that if I do not have wisdom, then I should pray to God, and He will give me wisdom without any hesitation. And I was telling you, many times we remember this Scripture in a context when we go to write an exam, or when we have some situation where we need to learn many things. And we pray, “Lord, give me wisdom,” and we completely take it out of the context of what the Scripture was talking about.

The Scripture was talking about gaining wisdom to know God’s purposes in the time of your trials. This Scripture, “every good thing and every perfect gift comes from above,” is sometimes understood in a very different way than how it is written. I want to invite all of you to look into the Scripture with a fresh attitude, to know what is that good thing and what is that perfect gift which has come from above.

God is Not Part of the Crooked World

This world is an evil world—I believe nobody doubts it. The world is full of evil things, and it is not just the things that happen in this world that are crooked. Sometimes, the way we understand things—how we accumulate, how we do our things, and how we profit—can be wrong. And we think these profits are coming from God, but they may be harming us. These things are not aligned with the righteousness of God. God has no part in them. So, we should not be deceived into thinking that these things came from God when they come from crooked ways. We should have things clear. God is not part of any evil thing. Do not be deceived.

Look at the second part of verse 17. It says, “coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.” So here, there is a comparison made between the lights of this world. We are talking about the luminaries—the sun, the moon, and the stars of this world. Physical things and physical lights are shadows that will change.

The Word of Truth and the New Birth

As James is talking about, he says it is His will. It is God’s will that He brought us forth by the word of truth. If you read it in another translation, it is like we are born again by the word of truth. In Kannada, the meaning is that He begot us. We are born again; we are beginning a new life. And how is this new life processed? It is processed by the hearing of God’s Word; it is processed by the teaching of God’s Word. It says, by the word of truth, you are born again.

You know, when we mostly say this Scripture—that every good thing and every perfect gift comes from God—have you ever thought about it in terms of the word of peace? We hear a good sermon that touches our hearts, and we say, “Oh, thank you for the perfect gift—that Your word of truth transformed me.” Do not be deceived, my friends. Many times we consider things like a house to be the perfect gift that God wanted to give. We use this Scripture many times for material things or for the worldly things that we receive. You should not be carried away by those things, because they are all shadows that will change.

The Ultimate Gift: Salvation on the Cross

It is very rare that we look at the cross and say, “This was the perfect gift that I received from God.” But today I want to give that rightful understanding—not the understanding of material things—but what truly is that good thing and that perfect gift. It is none of the material things. God is righteous, and He is not a debtor to anyone. God is faithful to bless us with all the things that we need in this world.

When Jesus said, “Do not worry,” and “Do not be anxious,” He said something very important: your heavenly Father knows what you need. This is a great realization that we should have—my heavenly Father knows what I need. And if the parents of this world are so mindful to give us good things, how much more will my heavenly Father care for me? With that assurance in our lives, we do not worry about anything, because He is sufficient to provide what we need in this physical world.

But more important than any physical things of this world is to be drawn and to be focused on that precious perfect gift which God has given to us. And that gift is on the cross of Calvary—He who died for you. Through Him, you have salvation. There is no precious gift that is worth more than your salvation. Would you agree with me, my friends? There is nothing else in this world that we may possess that is more valuable than the salvation which God has given to us. And that was free—it is the free gift of God.

Overcoming Deception and Hypocrisy

Hallelujah. How much more we need to be thankful, and how much more we need to be mindful of that perfect gift, rather than being worried about so many other physical things. We are deceived by the devil by being drawn to physical things and by being made to believe that these physical things are the good gifts that God is going to give us—to make us love them and long for them—without understanding that the better gift, the best gift, the more perfect gift that God has given us is eternal life. When we understand this truth, that becomes our foremost concern and our priority.

Look at verse 18—it says it was His will. When I read Genesis chapter 3—Adam and Eve committed sin and ate the forbidden fruit. There are things we fail in, and once we have fallen, we cannot do anything to erase it. But look at Adam and Eve. If they had said, “Let us wait for God and say we are sorry,” would that have happened? No. The normal tendency of a sinner is not to draw near to God, but to go away from God. Look at David—until Nathan came, he was trying to hide it.

The normal human character is to hide and conceal. One of the greatest disasters in the Christian life is to be a hypocrite. We have many hypocrites—outwardly looking good and spiritual. We worry more about our face in this world and how people look at us, concealing hidden sins. This is our will—to hide sin and live a normal ritualistic life. But the will of God is that everybody should be born again.

The Unconditional Love of God

Just imagine—if God had thought, “I am not going to go after Adam and Eve. Let them come to Me.” God knows that we will never profit Him, yet in His unconditional love, He came in search of us. The good and perfect gift in James is that free gift which Paul talks about in Romans—the free gift of God.

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. What is that good and perfect gift? Let us say only one thing: the good and perfect gift God gave is Himself. He gave me Himself on the cross of Calvary. He gave His very life, His last drop of blood, redeeming me, making me His child, and giving me eternal life. There is no gift comparable to this.

Closing Prayer

Let us draw near to God for this perfect gift—to be born again, to be taught, regenerated, and cleansed by His Word. Shall we pray?

Loving Father, we thank You, Lord, for this precious gift. Nothing in this world can compare to this. Lord, we have received a lot of blessings for our livelihood, but more than all those things, we value the salvation You have given to us. Lord, give us wisdom that we will not seek You for perishing things, but for eternal life. You were disappointed with those who looked for You just for bread that perishes; teach us to seek You for the right reasons. Lord, the One who has given His only begotten Son—what shall He withhold from us? You are faithful to provide what we need, but help us not to set our minds on worldly things. Help us to be drawn to You for eternal life.

God bless you all.
